The church of the Annunziata

This is the bell tower of the church of the Annunziata, or the Annunciation.

It can be found by continuing along further along Via Roma after the Cathedral.

It is a famous local landmark and is instantly recognisable because of its relative height and symmetrical dimensions.

The stone carving shown below can be found on the outside of the church. It depicts the moment when the Archangel Gabriel tells Mary that she is to be the Mother of Jesus, that is, the Annunciation.

This cast iron window grate has the letters AGP written in it. They are an abbreviation of the Latin phrase Ave Gratia Plena, the very words Gabriel used when greeting "Mary - Hail [Mary] Full of Grace".

This photo shows the beautiful neo classical interior. Shaped in a cruciform, its shape is relatively squat, with a short nave.  The transepts are almost as large.  As can been seen in the picture, it has preserved the old tradition of having a low balustrade around the sanctuary.

Above the altar is a domed roof.  From the castle it is easy to pick out this distinctive feature against the Bovino skyline.

Saint Rita of Cascia This is the statue of Saint Rita of Cascia kept inside the church.

In keeping with tradition of this popular Italian saint, she is pictured kneeling before a crucifix.  The beam of light shows she is receiving the stigmata on her head.

A bunch of red roses is nearby.  Her life story concludes with a request for a rose from her family estate.  The seemingly impossible task of finding a rose in January was brought to fruition by the appearance of a single rose on a bare bush.

Her feast day is May 22nd.
